The Field Guide / Practical advice

What does a finca weekend really cost?

Use a complete cost breakdown instead of falling for a nice nightly headline.

Use a complete cost breakdown instead of falling for a nice nightly headline. A little preparation makes it much easier to enjoy the actual trip.

Start with the quoted total

Multiply the quoted nightly rate by the stay duration, then ask whether weekends, holiday dates and minimum stays change the price. Get the actual total for your dates in writing.

Add fees that groups forget

Cleaning, late checkout, guests above base occupancy, pets and equipment can matter. Deposits may be refundable but still affect how much cash you need up front.

Include the cost of getting there

Fuel, tolls, shared vans and a separate trip for groceries can make a “cheap” house less attractive. Make sure anyone without a car has a realistic plan to arrive and leave.

Divide fairly

Decide whether children pay, whether a couple shares a room, and how you will treat a guest staying for only part of the trip. Share the math before booking so there are no awkward surprises.

The bottom line

Make a checklist, ask direct questions and request written confirmation of the details that matter to your group. Real properties and policies vary, so verify everything with the operator before sending money.
